COVER YOUR BACK – particularly when snorkeling!
One–kind–fits–all sunscreen days are long gone. The latest come in several different formulations, and application methods vary from rubbing to spraying.
The sun is very intense on St. Croix. Avoid getting a sun burn by using plenty of sunscreen and limiting exposure during the hottest hours (10am to 2pm) Too much sun is not only painful but may cause Malignant Melanoma which is a dangerous and all too often deadly form of cancer.
Arizona Sun products are a good bet.
For Sensitive Skin
Clinique Super City Block SPF 25
Instead of using skin-irritating chemicals, this cream contains the physical barrier titanium dioxide, providing protection against UVA and UVB that's gentle on skin. It's also oil-free and surprisingly sheer.
Priced just under $20.00
For Dry Skin
Almay Sun Protector for Face SPF 30
A great multi–tasker, this sunscreen does more than merely block UVA and UVB rays. It also contains moisturizing aloe and cucumber, plus olive-leaf extract and vitamins C and E to protect skin from damaging free radicals. Priced around $10.00
For Oily Skin
DDF Matte Finish Photo-Age Protection SPF 30
Women often blame sunscreen for breakouts and shininess, but this one lives up to its name
Quick Tan is a fine-misting spray–on self tanner that provides immediate golden color. This fast–drying, non–greasy spray provides even coverage and will not fade, streak, smear or give you an orange appearance. THIS IS NOT A SUNSCREEN.
Look for hydrating lotions containing antioxidants like grape seed extract, green tea and L-ascorbic acid. Those can even out discoloration and boost SPF.
Tip: To help active ingredients penetrate skin, press–don't rub–it in.
Fair, Sensitive Skin Look for zinc and titanium oxide blocks are less irritating than chemical ones because they sit on top of the skin. These aren't the bright white creams of the past. Today the minerals are micronized and nearly transparent.
Tip: Use alone to avoid a reaction with other creams.
Dark Skin
Look for clear sprays and gels made with the chemical sun filters oxybenzone and avobenzone. Physical blocks, which consist of highly reflective, chalky minerals like zinc and titanium oxide, can leave a gray, ashy cast on dark complexions.
Tip: To make sure you don't miss a spot, apply clear formulas with small, circular motions all over.
Hint: Take some baby powder in your beach tote. Sprinkle over the sand sticking to your legs and it comes right off with a quick brush of your hand.
