The grounds of St. George Botanical Gardens was an Arawak Indian Village from 100 to 900 A.D. Then it became a Danish Sugar Plantation from 1733 to 1917. In 1930 it was a cattle ranch, and in 1972 the Botanical Garden.

This is the main building at St. George Botanical Gardens.  It contains the admission area, the Great Hall, restrooms, displays of interest and a terrific little gift shop, with some unique items.

Elsewhere on the grounds, is a library housed in an emancipated worker's cottage.  It has about 500 volumes of specialized reference materials. St George Botanical Gardens has something for everyone.

The total garden covers 17 acres and additionally contains the ruins of a sugarcane village and rum factory.  You can see a bake oven, blacksmith's shop, various foundations and the overseer's house.

There are over 1500 varieties of plants at St George Botanical Gardens. The fern house is nice as is the orchid house.

Don't forget to wander through the cactus garden and the rain forest.

Did you know?  Branding irons were used to mark rum barrels to identify which plantation there were from  One iron from St. George's is on display there.

Recently the Governor and Lt Gov wives visited St. George's Botanical Gardens and look forward to promoting this georgus, unique and historical village.

East End Beaches There are many beaches East of Christiansted on St. Croix . Some are a bit harder to get to but usually not as crowded.
