Where are those Beer drinking pigs?
A visit to St. Croix is not complete without a trip to the "Domino Club" and a drink of their specialty "Mamma Wanna". We watched as even the most experienced social drinkers reduced themselves to grinning party animals after a few of these concoctions. Barb and I along with our gathered friends were not the exception.
Tucked away in the dark of the rain forest it is well worth the challenge to find and an even bigger one to find your way back after an afternoon of reveling. Barb swears she knows how to get there every time we visit but strangely, we always get a full-blown tour of the rain forest repeatedly. Trust me you want to make this stop one while the sun is still your friend if you are not a local.
The thatched roof and roadside sign are the only giveaways that this is home to the famous "Beer Drinking Pig" a provider to the owner's retirement program. Norma, AKA "Big Mamma", is the fun loving proprietor, host, cook, bartender and holder of the secret recipe that is likened to rocket fuel which bears her name. Naively we asked her what the name "Mamma Wanna" stood for and with pride she exclaimed that after a few of her specialties mamma will do anything she wanna do. We did not pursue the conversation any further after that.
A simple bar with stools over a gravel floor, tables with dominos set for the locals to pass time, a single pool table and space enough for local receptions and gatherings round out the club's atmosphere. The main attraction is contained in stalls and protected from the non-paying public a few yards away under a close watch by Big Mamma.
A few dollars for a non-alcoholic beer plus a few more for the price of admission gains you entrance to view the spectacle even cruise ships tout "The Beer Drinking Pig"! The entertainers, many hundreds of pounds of them, are replacements of the original, which is buried with monument and all on the grounds. One has to assume that the demise of the original beer drinking pig, was the reason the current attractions only consume beer without the kick.
At the risk of a few fingers the liquid treat was immediately inhaled by the beer drinking pig, no need to open the can first since these are true professionals. I found out the hard way that retreating quickly from these guzzlers prevents a beer shower and injury from the empty projectile. The entire show is over in a matter of seconds and has the stars squealing for more. Once over it is a return to the club and another "Mamma Wanna" to share the experience with the patrons and friends.
We make it a point to visit "Big Mamma" and the beer drinking pigs, when we are on island.
Though not a life changing experience it is a fun place and worth the trip.

Northshore Beaches: Some have smooth sandy bottoms ideal for swimming, and others have rock and coral-lined entries perfect for snorkeling! Many beaches on St. Croix are continuous with other beaches having a different name.
Southside Beaches:The south shore is dotted with so many little beaches that you just happen onto, that is highly unlikely that we have found them all.
East End Beaches : There are many beaches East of Christiansted on St. Croix . Some are a bit harder to get to but usually not as crowded.
West End Beaches : St. Croix offers a large number of beaches and water activities. Try a few for a fun and memorable vacation. All of the beaches in the US Virgin Islands are accessible to the public.
