SOUTHSIDE BEACHES

Southside Beaches are numerous!

The southside is dotted with so many little beaches that you just happen onto, that is highly unlikely that we have found them all.

ISSAC'S BAY

LOCATION: at southeast end of St. Croix Southside Beach

DIRECTIONS: Take Rt. 82 to Point Udall

Swimming : Calm
Beach side: Sand with a few little rocks
Food/Drinks: No

Water Sports Center : No
Accessibility: Foot
Snorkeling:  Yes

Amenities: None, you are in Paradise

When you get to Point Udall – Millennium Monument , there is a trail that leads down to Isaac's Bay. Water is deeper here than at Jack's Bay and not quite as much sea grass. I am told that there are around 400 different types of fish that live among the reefs at this end of St. Croix . There are certainly plenty but who can count that fast? The beach is very nice, long and sandy though stay away from the far right. It is full of rocks and little bushes. This also a turtle nesting area so please be careful. Snorkeling is the best. Swimming is good, though there is an occasional strong current. These lovely beaches are secluded and natural, a perfect place in the sun.

From Isaac's you can then walk to Jacks's Bay. It is worth the hike. Access is also obtained from the far left side of Grape Tree Bay . Snorkeling is ideal. Swimming is good, though there is an occasional strong current. Jack's and Isaac's are very similar. What goes for one goes for the other. This also a turtle nesting area so please be careful. This area is under the Nature Conservancy protection. During nesting season July through October guided hikes are offered. And kiosks are in the works for info on the surrounding nature and trails.

Swimming : Calm

This beach has many different names but it is still a very nice St. Croix beach. Sunscreen is a must for this beach. There is very little shade, but it is long and sandy. Good for walking, sunning, and swimming. There is some sea grass in spots. Overall this is a very relaxing picturesque spot.

PICTURE PERFECT

Beach

Machineel is the name of a very dangerous tree that provides wonderful shade and NOT so wonderful green turning to gold apples. DO NOT EAT! The apples are poisonous and the sap even from a leaf will blister your skin. Sap in the eyes will cause blindness. These trees are scattered all over St. Croix; not just the Southside Beaches but usually near the shore. They provide some very nice shade but not much else.

JUST AN IDEA

Grab James Michener's "Caribbean" and sit on an unpopulated beach. Boy will you go back in time.

This novel covers the history of the area from the 1300s to Castro's Cuba , including tribal conflicts on the island of Dominica , the arrival of Columbus, the buccaneers, the rise of sugar plantations, the slave revolts, and the social problems of today. It covers all of the Caribbean , but you imagination can let you be on any island looking out to sea. Are you the young Indian wife spotting a ship on the horizon? Should you plan a feast or ready the weapons?
