A schooner sailing into St. Croix was really not out of the ordinary nor was it native to the Caribbean yet it was a perfect fit for the Gallows Bay Harbor . The World Ocean School had sailed into the Virgin Islands in early December with "The Roseway" a new attraction with hopes of teaching high school students the art of sailing and the virtues of teamwork.

Her bright sails caught my eye on the horizon from Sugar Beach and immediately sparked my curiosity. Much to my surprise after checking a few local sources, I discovered that the Roseway schooner was offering excursions on a daily basis to the public. For $45.00, a two and a half hour adventure from Gallows Bay harbor to many kilometers off St. Croix was in the making. A beautiful day of sunshine made the trip even more rewarding.

Maneuvering the schooner took some getting use to but once mastered our guest crew used every inch of the schooner for photo ops, viewing the island from afar and just social mingling. After two hours of open sea, we turned toward the harbor, dropped sails and ventured back to dock at Gallows Bay . No crusty sailor’s stories to tell; only a completely rewarding experience and a lot of respect for this form of transportation past and present.

If you are fortunate enough to visit St. Croix when "The Roseway" is operating, (they hope to make this their winter home) this adventure is necessary.
Enjoy our photo trip.
