Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, was so proclaimed by, President Bush in 1992. Located on St Croix , the park protects a diverse ecological area, including saltwater ponds, freshwater marshes, coral reefs and the largest remaining mangrove forest in the USVI. Many species of endangered birds and turtles live in Salt River Bay . The Spanish, French, Dutch, English and Danish all had settlements here. On his second voyage to the Americas , Christopher Columbus visited Salt River Bay in 1493. This is the first and only documented landing site under the U.S. Flag. A museum to house and display the many Indian and colonial artifacts found here is in the planning stage. This park preserves colonial and prehistoric ruins. You can view the only Tai no tribe ceremonial ball court unearthed in the Lesser Antilles and a Dutch earthworks fort from the 1600's. There are conducted hiking, diving and kayak tours available. There a reef just off shore, this makes for some terrific swimming and snorkeling. Don't forget that these are resorts and privately owned condos.
