Edward England was born as Edward Seegar in Ireland , was a famous pirate sailing the African coast and Indian Ocean from 1717 to 1720. England was an officer on a Jamaican sloop which was captured by Christopher Winter. It was then that he became a Caribbean pirate by joining Winter's crew.
The ships he sailed on included the Pearl . He exchanged her for the Fancy in 1720. His flag was the classic Jolly Roger with a skull above two crossed thigh bones on a black background.
An English privateer, Woodes Rogers, attacked the pirate's stronghold in the Bahamas . Edward England managed to escape and he took many prizes while sailing along the coast of Africa , the Azores and Cape Verde islands.
England traded his sloop for a larger ship & renamed her, the Pearl and returned to Africa in the spring of 1719. He was very successful, preying on two dozen ships. One ship the pirates kept, named her Victory and made John Taylor the captain.
In 1720 the Pearl & Victory sailed along the Malabar Coast of India. It was during this time that the Pearl was exchanged for a ship armed with 34 guns which was renamed the Fancy.
Edward England then sailed for Johanna Island . They met 3 large English and Dutch ships which were trading with the East Indies . Two of the ships escaped but the Cassandra captained by James Macrae stayed to engage the Fancy. A fierce battle lasted for several hours. Both the Cassandra and the Fancy were grounded, but continued to fire upon one another relentlessly.
Leaving behind a 75,000 treasure, Macrae fled to the shore. The Cassandra had 37 casualties while Edward England 's force had lost more than 90. After 10 days of hiding, Macrae went aboard the Victory hoping for mercy Taylor wanted to kill him but England wanted to spare his life. Edward England was able to persuade Taylor after several drinks of rum. Macrae was given the badly damaged Fancy.
Macrae with a crew of 43, then sailed for Bombay . During their 7 week voyage they were plagued by hunger & thirst. Upon reaching Bombay , Macrae was given a hero's welcome & eventually became the governor of Madras in 1725 & remained so until 1730. During that time he collected 800,000 in bribe money.

East End Beaches : There are many beaches East of Christiansted on St. Croix . Some are a bit harder to get to but usually not as crowded.
West End Beaches : St. Croix offers a large number of beaches and water activities. Try a few for a fun and memorable vacation. All of the beaches in the US Virgin Islands are accessible to the public.
