It has straight or slightly curved blade sharpened on the cutting edge, and a hilt often featuring a solid cupped or basket-shaped guard. Quoting Peter L. Warburton from the American Schooner Association: "She was launched in 1948 in Wickford, RI. She was Mr. Vaughan's pet project and was built from the wood the government was sending him during the war to build mine sweepers with.
The war ended, the wood stopped coming and she was finished approx. 10 feet shorter on deck than she was designed to be. My father owned Black Pearl from the time I was two years of age until his untimely death in 1983. Black Pearl was the flag ship for the American Sail Training Association, the organization my father founded in 1973, after we sailed Black Pearl on her trans atlantic voyage in 1972, to participate in Tall Ships '72 in Kiel Germany. I grew up on the boat until I was 27 years old, I was 15 when we sailed trans atlantic in 72. Black Pearl has never been to Venezuela nor has she been to Portugal. She is in Bridgeport, CT still, as far as i know.
Sincerely,
Peter L. Warburton

One of the most popular instruments of the seventeenth century was the Davis quadrant or back-staff. Captain John Davis conceived this instrument during his voyage to search for the Northwest Passage. It was described in a 1595 publication, Seaman's Secrets. It was called a quadrant because it could measure up to 90 degrees, that is, one quarter of a circle. The observer determined the altitude of the sun by observing its shadow while simultaneously sighting the horizon. Relatively inexpensive and sturdy, with a proven track record, Davis quadrants remained popular for more than 150 years, even after much more sophisticated instruments using double-reflection optics were invented.
