ANNE BONNY – A CARIBBEAN PIRATE

Anne Bonny was born in Ireland an illegitimate child of a prominent lawyer, William Cormac and the family maid, Peg Brennan.

The father left to avoid any scandal and took both mother and child with him to Charleston, South Carolina . He became a successful merchant but not a successful parent. Anne was stubborn and bad tempered. There are many stores about her various altercation but two stories appear repeatedly. One is the stabbing of a servant girl and the other a beating of an unsuccessful rapist.

Anne married the unsuccessful pirate and sailor, James Bonny. They started their married life in the pirate haven of New Providence, Bahamas. James had a difficult time supporting his wife and finally became an informer for Woodes Rogers, the new governor. This only disillusioned his wife further. She turned her attention to the dashing "Calico" Jack Rackham. They had an affair and Caribbean Pirate, "Calico" Jack began lavishing her with gifts. After a short while he offered to buy her from James Bonny. When he refused Anne and "Calico" Jack crept aboard a merchant ship with some of his old pirate buddies and eloped. Anne's pirate life began. He had taken a Dutch trader prior to marrying Ann, and that was when Mary Read joined the crew.

Anne Bonny and Mary soon became close companions. There are various stories has to how her true sex was discovered, but Anne agreed to keep her secret. Rackham became suspicious of Anne's close relationship with the new sailor, whereas Mary revealed her secret to him.

During Anne Bonny's time with "Calico" Jack she is said to have become pregnant. She was taken to Cuba to deliver the baby and later was picked back up. Life then went on as normal. "Calico" Jack Rackham's pirate career was slipping and he was taking on only trade and fishing boats. He had taken a Dutch trader prior to marrying Ann, and that was when Mary Read joined the crew, to become a Caribbean Pirate.

A former priate, Captain Barnet, now commander of the British Navy attacked "Calico" Jack Rackham ship in the fall of 1720. The entire crew of the Revenge was drunk. The fight was short lived as the two women were out numbered and out gunned. The entire crew was taken to Port Royal for trial.

The trial was a big sensation, because the background of the female prisoners was reviled. Anne Bonny and Mary Reed were women who escaped from traditional restrictions and in their own way, fought for equality between men and women.

Everybody was found guilty of piracy. The sentence was death by hangin . Mary and Anne both claimed to be pregnant and their lives were spared untill after the children were born. It was against the law to kill and innocent unborn child.

The rest of them were hung on November 27, 1720. Calico Jack's body was gibbeted and hung as a warning on Deadman's Cay near Port Royal.

There is no further record of Anne Bonny after the trial. There is no record of her execution or her release. Some say that her wealthy father bought her release after the child was born.
